The Ruins of San Ignacio: The Trip from Iguazú

The purpose of this full-day tour is to visit the Jesuit Reductions located in San Ignacio. However, since this city is 240 km from Puerto Iguazú, we can include stops at other points of interest on the way there or back.

People who take this tour usually take the opportunity to visit theWanda Mines, where they can learn about the mining operations and even buy jewelry and semi-precious stone items made on-site at very reasonable prices.

But our journey shouldn't stop there. There are some truly beautifulwaterfalls, some of which even haveswimming areas(keep in mind that in our province, the weather is ideal for swimming nine months out of the year).

Another option is to visit an orchid garden in the city ofMontecarlo, where theNational Orchid Festival has been held every October for over 30 years.

Or perhaps, in the town ofJardín América, we can visit the local cooperative, which processes and sells typical regional products such as yerba mate, cassava starch (the main ingredient in chipas), and papaya in syrup, among others. Depending on the time of year, we can tour the processing plant where these foods are made.

The options are countless, ranging from scenic attractions to cultural experiences, as well as historical, geographical, and economic-productive aspects.

These options include the opportunity to visit the four missions located in the province of Misiones: Loreto, Santa Ana, San Ignacio, and Santa María la Mayor. That said, it would take much longer than a single day to visit them all.

We usually visit San Ignacio Mini, where we can explore the visitor center and take a guided tour led by a local guide (included). It is also the best-preserved site in our region.

The Jesuit missions were built in the 16th and 17th centuries in Argentina. The church, the Fathers' House, the cemetery, the dwellings, and the town hall are arranged around a central plaza.

Local stone—red asperón—was used in large blocks to build San Ignacio. These were monumental structures. Proof of this is that, despite the passage of time and deterioration, they still stand.

The Jesuit Redoubt of San Ignacio Miní, along with those of Our Lady of Loreto, Saint Anne, and Saint Mary Major (located in Argentina), were designated World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1984.

The city of San Ignacio is a tourist destination featuring breathtaking landscapes such as the Peñón del Teyú Cuaré and the Yabebirí River, as well as natural wonders scattered throughout the area, all set against a backdrop of majestic native flora that permeates every corner.

Teyú Cuaré Provincial Park

Located in San Ignacio, it was established to protect a rock outcrop of exceptional scenic value. Its natural caves serve as a refuge for numerous species of bats. It is a site of historical and cultural significance that served as an inspiration to the writer Horacio Quiroga.

For nature lovers, this is a transitional zone between the Paranaense rainforest and the grasslands that characterize the neighboring province of Corrientes.
